A large number of avant-garde artists and writers took a particular interest in children’s culture and their literature. In fact, the development of picturebooks has such a close relationship to the avant-garde arts, it could -and perhaps should- be seen as an art movement in itself. From early revolutionary Russian artists’ book design for children through Surrealism and other arts movements to the present, the picturebook is one of the most exciting formats and radical genres of the C21st.
